FAQs

What is a fire door and how is it different from a standard door?

A fire door is specifically designed to resist fire and smoke for a set period (e.g. 30, 60 or 90 minutes) using certified materials and components to maintain integrity.

Fire doors are typically required in corridors, stairwells, flat entrances, plant rooms and any escape routes in non-domestic or multi-occupancy buildings.

Communal fire doors should be checked quarterly and flat entrance doors should be checked annually. Inspections must cover seals, hinges, closers, gaps and certification labels.

Some components (like seals or closers) can be replaced, but the overall door set must remain compliant. Damaged, warped or uncertified doors should be replaced.

Yes, unless fitted with approved hold-open devices. Keeping a fire door propped open renders it ineffective and breaches fire safety regulations.
